Tarnas’ stellar reputation was built on his first book The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View, which became a bestseller and remains in use in universities. It brought into the mainstream the notion that major events of history correlate with planetary positions, which may seem pass remarkable to astrologers, but was then a revelation to the public. With such an anchoring in the objective, true reality, we have both the strength and the freedom to pursue knowledge and art. Christ is Lord over everything, giving us context and boldness for our own acts of artistic creation. The doctrines of the creation, the redemption, and the future resurrection provide a framework that permeates all aspects of reality. The Bible's portrayal of reality is not limited to matters of the soul. So why is the Evangelical church marked by both an aesthetic barrenness and an attitude of fear and avoidance towards the arts? Is our church's understanding of the arts actually rooted in a proper understanding of the Bible? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. Murakami has all of those elements intertwined in A Wild Sheep Chase and symbolism of the sheep brought this verse of New Testament Scripture to my mind: What he discovers is something that shakes him to his core and reveals an identity he had not realized. The protagonist begins a journey that takes him to the remotest part of Japan to find this sheep. The postcard draws the attention of a shadowy figure who demands the unnamed protagonist go find this unusual sheep or suffer the consequences. However, the ad includes an image of a sheep with a star on its back. These are not the sort of fairies who sit around waving magic wands and wearing fancy dresses to tea parties (though their flower attire is beautiful!) They feel so earth-grown – the “magic” is in the flowers, the friendship, the lessons they learn. ![]() The stories are full of the wonders of nature and the fairies’ exciting (but not too perilous) adventures. I’ve always appreciated that there are both boy and girl flower fairies and, though the girl flower fairies are the stars of all but one of the books in the series, side characters like Dandelion and Herb Robert and Snapdragon are great fun and so charmingly boy-ish and the mischievous elves add another scrappy-fun element. It was a treasure of an experience sharing it with my sons now. I wish it had been around when I was a little girl as I’m quite sure I would have loved it then. However, I found the series delightful, on the whole.
